The Friends are a non-profit , community based volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and promotion of the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area and its resources.

Located at the north end of the City of Brockville, Ontario, just 2 km from Highway 29, Mac Johnson Wildlife Area is operated by the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority and includes 532 hectares (1314 acres) of wetland, field and forest.



COMING EVENTS

  • Saturday, May 8, 2010 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Tree Sale in Centennial Road Parking Lot - White pine, scotch pine, gray birch, northern spruce, red maple, white cedar, silver maple, bitternut hickory, butternut, black walnut, sumac, black elderberry,red cedar. Cost: $7.50 - $25.00 Most trees are about 18" high, 2- 3 year's old.
  • The Mac Johnson Master Plan and maps are now posted on the CRCA website. You can find the Executive Summary at CRCA website. This plan will determine how the area will be protected, developed and used over the next 20 years. For more information, call (613) 546-4228.
    *** NEWS ***

    ** TRUMPETER SWANS - A breeding pair arrived on July 22, 1999. On May 14, 2000 these birds were officially named Mac and Milli and eleven additional swans were released into the reservoir.

    Four new swan cygnets were hatched on June 14, 2005.
    Devoted parents are Milli and Mac 2

    There are now about 45 Trumpeter Swans in the local area.

    Update - Unfortunately three of the cygnets were killed by snapping turtles in early July, 2005.

    In June 2007, two cygnets (pictured) were hatched and unfortunately killed by natural predators in July, 2007.
    ** Ongoing - since 1998 - Benches, trail markers and maintenance on north and south side trails
    ** The wheelchair accessible trail (Trail 1) was begun in 1999 by the Friends of MJWA and completed by the employees of Procter and Gamble on September 22, 2000.
    ** May 8, 2001 - Check out the firepit built by The Friends from the Dupont donation.
    ** Spring 2002 - Fall 2007- the Friends and Procter and Gamble employees put fencing (2000 metres) along Centennial Road.
