About the Parish.

Our parish incorporates two congregations:

  1. St James the Apostle in the Town of Perth, Ontario, Canada, and
  2. St Augustine Canterbury on the Second Line in Drummond Township.

St James the Apostle in the Town of Perth, Ontario

Geographically we are (almost) the most south-westerly parish in the Diocese of Ottawa, and in the Deanery of Lanark.

The Parish of St. James the Apostle in Perth consists of approximately 300 active families, but many other families and individuals in the town and district look to the parish for spiritual guidance and services.

Our worship is the focus of our parish life with Sunday morning services and weekday services (see Service Times), but there are many other opportunities for ministry, prayer, praise and spiritual growth (see Spiritual Growth).

Our Rector, the Rev'd Bill Simons, is assisted by a faithful core of committed lay people who act as readers, sidespeople, eucharistic assistants, choir members, intercessors and prayer leaders, and Sunday School teachers. As well, we have a 'chapter' of dedicated retired priests who also function from time to time as requested.

St James' Church is located at the corner of Drummond and Harvey Streets. It is a sturdy grey stone structure with a large bell tower and features magnificent stained glass windows and graceful carved wood on the interior. It seats approximately 400 people.

The parish was founded in 1816 as a garrison church, and the present building was constructed 1856-1861. In 1836 St James' was granted a Royal Charter by King William IV.

Well known for its fine music, St James' boasts a full Liturgical Choir to enhance the regular Sunday worship as well as special liturgies (Advent Service of Lessons and Carols, etc.) and a Gallery Choir which sings at special festive Evensongs and on other special occasions (Holy Week services, etc.)

Our choirs join with other groups in the community for special musical events (the Spring Concert, Singalong Messiah, etc.), and have for several years given the immensely popular 'Last Night of the Proms' Concert in May. (See Music at St James.)

St Augustine's of Canterbury

St Augustine's of Canterbury is located approximately seven kilometres north-east of Perth, at the corner of County Road 10 (North Street) out of town and Richardson Road.

It is a beautiful little stone church in the midst of spreading farmland, and the congregation consists of approximately thirty families and individuals.

Worship services are held the second and fourth Sundays of the month at 9:15 a.m. and alternate between the Eucharist and Morning Prayer. (See Service Times.)

In 1998 St Augustine's celebrated its one hundredth anniversary of worship, witness and ministry in Drummond Township.
