Our Pond in Winter

It is just a small pond, perhaps 20 feet across and about six feet deep in the Spring when everything is full with snow melt. That said, it has character. It changes through-out the year. It's fun to watch.

Some tiems it seems to be looking back.

Sometimes there is rain or melt water on the top.

Snow on the water becomes slush.

On ice.

The pond has even been known to crack a smile.

If we go a long time without a thaw or rain, unfortunately, it drains out from below.

The entire base is clay and after six years or so, there is a layer of organic matter. Still the water level drops, taking the ice with it.

Here the ice is craIcking around the edge as it sinks.

Note the cattails bending with the angle of the ice.

The first Summer after it was dug, it drained right out. The drought that year didn't help.

It fills with melt water.

As the 2019 thaw, freeze, thaw cycle progresses, it fills.

Now full to flowing out the drainage ditch, the ground around is thawing. Soon planting will start and with it the busyness of the growing season.

It is starting.

We hope you can join us at some point.
